Name definition: The name “Nanaimo” is a contraction of the Indian word “Snanaimo” which means “Great People”. It is also a town in southwestern British Columbia on Vancouver Island, west of Vancouver, and a “Nanaimo Bar” – a popular Canadian dessert.
Why did we call her Nanaimo? We’d love the sound of Nanaimo when we were living in Vancouver, it rolls off the tongue nicely, and had kicked around the idea of calling one of our first cats this, and so she was.
